Sandra Amaral, MD, MHS is a core faculty member at the Center for Pediatric Clinical Effectiveness (CPCE) at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), an attending physician in the Division of Nephrology and Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at CHOP. She is also an assistant professor of Pediatrics and Epidemiology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Amaral’s research is focused on kidney transplantation with particular interests in reducing racial disparities in access to transplant for children and adults and improving the transition of adolescents and young adults from the pediatric to adult health care settings. Studies range from retrospective studies that examine how to improve access to the waiting list to testing interventions to improve medication adherence and healthcare self-management among adolescents. Dr. Amaral is the PI for U-REAACT, an NIH-funded multi-center study testing text messaging and economic incentives to engage transplanted youth in their medication adherence and self-management.
