Nicola D Ruth, United Kingdom

paediatric hepatology trainee
Birmingham Children's Hospital
I'm a paediatrician working in West Midlands, UK. I have a long term career goal of speciality training in paediatric gastroenterology/hepatology. I have interests in oncology and palliative care, and prior to qualifying as a doctor I worked as a nurse at Myton Hamlet Hospice, in Warwick. Prior to medical school I completed a 4-year BSc in Medical Biology at Brunel University. I spent 6 months at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire, USA in medical research, and more recently have completed an Academic Clinical Fellow post within the West Midlands deanery and an 18 month research fellowship at University of Birmingham/Birmingham Children's Hospital which acted as a great springboard for learning new skills and applying for grants. I am currently doing my PhD in immunology at the University of Birmingham/Birmingham Children's Hospital where I am looking at using pluripotent stem cells in manufacturing a cancer therapy for paediatric liver tumours. I'm still working within the department of hepatology at BCH and aim to continue some clincial work whilst doing my PhD. My long term career goal is to stay in academics within the West Midlands.
